Abstract
Pjegava hijena, Crocuta crocuta (Erxleben, 1777), zbog izuzetne složenosti društvenog života predstavlja idealan model za bihevioralna istraživanja. Kompleksan društveni život uvjetuje brojne promjene i adaptacije u ponašanju ovih životinja, koje su po nebrojenim karakteristikama sličnije primatima nego preostalim karnivorima. Dinamičan život u klanu, sofisticirana vokalizacija, otpornost na promjene okoliša te iznenađujući stupanj kooperacije omogućuju pjegavoj hijeni položaj vršnog predatora diljem Afrike. Usprkos tome, njezina brojnost opada uslijed antropogenih djelovanja koja utječu na sve aspekte života pjegave hijene.
Abstract (english)
Due to the extreme complexity of its social life, the species spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta (Erxleben, 1777) is an ideal model for behavioral research. Complex social life causes numerous changes and adaptations in the behavior of this animal, which is in innumerable characteristics more similar to primates than to other carnivores. Dynamic life in clans, sophisticated vocalization, resilience to environmental change, and a surprising degree of cooperation allow the spotted hyena the position of a top predator across Africa. Nevertheless, abundance of the spotted hyena is declining due to anthropogenic actions that are affecting all aspects of hyenas life.
