Abstract
Paleolimnological research of lake Vrbické pleso, a glacial lake in the Low Tatra Mountains, in Slovakia, was carried out with the aim of reconstructing the last several hundred years of the lake’s environmental history, using subfossil Chironomidae remains as proxy. A short lake sediment core was taken from the lake in November 2021, and an analysis of chironomid head capsules, a loss-on-ignition analysis and radiocarbon dating of plant macrofossils and was done. In total, 54 chironomid taxa were recorded, belonging to six subfamilies: Podonominae, Tanypodinae, Diamesinae, Prodiamesinae, Orthocladiinae and Chironominae. Results have shown that the most significant changes in chironomid assemblages correspond to the intensifying of human influence in the lake area, as do the changes in organic and carbonate contents in sediment. Changes in chironomid assemblage composition and the presence of indicator species are reflective of climatic oscillations, such as recent climate change and the Little Ice Age, which is additionally supported by results of the radiocarbon dating.

Paleolimnološko istraživanje jezera Vrbické pleso, ledenjačkog jezera na Niskim Tatrama u Slovačkoj, provedeno je s ciljem rekonstruiranja okolišnih uvjeta jezera tijekom zadnjih nekoliko stotina godina, koristeći subfosilne Chironomidae kao indikatore (eng. proxy). Kratki uzorak sedimenta je prikupljen u jezeru, u studenom 2021. godine. Učinjene su analiza glavenih čahura ličinki Chironomidae, analiza jezerskog sedimenta metodom gubitka žarenjem (eng. loss-on-ignition) te datiranje biljnih makrofosila radiougljikom. Ukupno je zabilježeno 54 svojti porodice Chironomidae, koji se svrstavaju u šest potporodica: Podonominae, Tanypodinae, Diamesinae, Prodiamesinae, Orthocladiinae i Chironominae. Rezultati su pokazali da najznačajnije promjene u sastavu zajednica Chironomidae te promjene u organskom i karbonatnom sadržaju sedimenta povijesno odgovaraju intenziviranju antropogenog djelovanja na području jezera. Promjene sastava zajednica Chironomidae te prisutnost indikatorskih vrsta, dodatno podržane rezultatima datiranja radiougljikom, odraz su klimatskih oscilacija, uključujući Malo Ledeno Doba te recentnih klimatskih promjena.
