Abstract
Metalotioneini (MT) su unutarstanični proteini male molekulske mase koji zbog visokog sadržaja cisteina imaju visok afinitet za vezanje teških metala. Imaju specifičan aminokiselinski sastav, koji uključuje mnogo cisteina, i pretežno bez aromatskih aminokiselina i histidina. Prisutni su kod prokariota i eukariota, a u biljkama i sisavcima podijeljeni su u četiri skupine: MT-1, MT-2, MT-3 i MT-4). MT štite stanice i organe od trovanja kadmijem i drugim teškim metalima, služe kao antioksidansi, antiupalni i antiapoptotički čimbenici, te služe kao zaštita od oksidacijskog stresa. Prekomjerna ekspresija MT-a povezana je sa starenjem te može dovesti do mnogih bolesti poput raka, dijabetesa i raznih neurodegenerativnih bolesti.
Abstract (english)
Metallothioneins (MT) are intracellular low molecular weight proteins that, due to their high cysteine content, have high affinity for heavy metal binding. They have a specific amino acid composition, that includes many cysteines, mostly with no aromatic amino acids or histidine. They are present in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and in plants and mammals, they are divided into four groups: MT-1, MT-2, MT-3 and MT-4. Metallothioneins are preventing cells and organs toxicity induced by cadmium and other metal ions, they can haveantioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic factors and can protect against oxidative stress. Excessive metallothionein expression is associated with ageing and can lead to many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and various neurodegenerative diseases.
